Loving Up Your Local in The Big Apple
For the first time ever I made my way to New York and the NY Now Trade Show with a heavy heart. My usual excitement and enthusiasm for showcasing our Cityscapes and meeting customers in the States had been dented by the sudden death of Jimmy (my beloved cat) and the political turbulence in America since Trump’s inauguration. I just wanted to be home.
My grief and anxiety was swept away not long after the doors opened however by a whirlwind of customers heading to our stand to reorder and build on their existing Cityscape products by adding our new lines. Nathan and Co declared that our Oakland Cityscape product range had transformed his business. Selling over 500 tea towels in 6 months from his independent store, had put his business on the map and engaged his local residents to love their town. It’s a proud moment for me when I get to see how a design has had such a positive impact on a business and a neighbourhood.
New design briefs poured in from towns across the States and working closely with our US agent, Sara Richards, we almost doubled our sales for any other trade show that we’ve done anywhere in the world! I even got to join my sisters over the sea in fighting to protect women’s rights against the tyranny of Trump. A pedicure was in order to reward us and our sore feet for all of the hard work.
It’s great to meet up with retailers who I’ve collaborated with on Cityscapes and to hear the stories of their customers who have fallen in love with the map like illustration I’ve created that communicates the character and charm of their home town. Peppermint from Rochester NY and Salty Sea Studios Brigantine NJ said hello to their tea towels, which we proudly displayed on our stand.
The show is almost over but still goes on …. I head off later today and take an overnight plane to Frankfurt where I do it all over again and finally get home to my loved ones late on Valentines Day.
